10 Great Quotes About Poetry, Writing, and Art by Russell Edson

Published by Paul Szlosek
Paul Szlosek was born in Southbridge, Massachusetts, but currently resides in the nearby metropolis of Worcester. He was co-founder and host of the long-running Poet’s Parlor poetry reading in Southbridge and Sturbridge, as well as a past recipient of the Jacob Knight Award for Poetry. His poems have appeared in various local publications including the Worcester Review, Worcester Magazine, Sahara, Concrete Wolf, and Diner. He’s probably best known in the Worcester poetry community for his fanatical obsession with obscure poetry forms, and has invented his own including the ziggurat, the streetbeatina, and (most recently) the hodgenelle. The second quote in particular resonates with me.

Yes, it does with me too. I think it is a great quote about the fundamental differences between fiction and poetry.

I think it’s important to keep those differences in mind–prose poetry aside. 😉

Nice to see a post from you. Great quotes, I like the one that compares not being able to accept criticism as like wanting to go to Heaven without dying.

Thank you so much! I particularly like that quote too…

I especially liked the third quote myself. But they are all very revealing. A very existential view of writing and poetry. Another great post in this series, Paul!

Thanks so much, Brad. I especially like the third quote as well. I find what Edson has to say about writing and poetry extremely fascinating. He often compares the act of writing a poem to dreaming awake. An interesting thing is when I first started sharing my own poetry within our local poetry community, Edson was the poet most people compared it to, though I never actually saw the resemblance myself…
